Flap! to headline Ukulele Party Night

Standard

The Cairns Ukulele Festival is delighted to introduce to the Far North 5-piece party band Flap! featuring Jess Guille on banjo-ukulele and vocals, Eamon McNelis on trumpet and vocals, Mark Elton on double bass, Ben Hendry on Drums, and Donald Stewart on trombone.

flap2From Melbourne, Australia, Flap! play original music that is both old and new, inspired by the entire human diaspora. You can hear influences from 1920’s jazz, Gypsy brass, English Folk to Trinidadian Calypso, and ska, all blended into a highly danceable exciting mix of music. They are, in their own words, “a fiery yet charming five piece band of brass, guts, words and skins who crank out up-tempo songs, turning ordinary shoes into dancing ones”.

Currently on tour with Cat Empire, Flap! is no stranger to the Australian and European festival circuits (in fact, the band was formed during a festival, playing their first gig in Denmark!), leaving audiences gasping for breath everywhere they go. They’ll be playing Cairns for the first time, as part of a huge line-up of national and international ukulele royalty.

The Ukulele Party Night is held Saturday July 6th at The Union Jack.

Craig Chee returns to Cairns!

Craig Chee, originally from Hawaii, but now hailing from Oregon, has become a true member of the Cairns Ukulele Festival family with his boisterous laugh, party attitude, and of course his fantastic musicianship! Over the years, we have seen Craig grow as a performer and we look forward to seeing what he’s cooked up for this year’s gigs, particularly with Sarah with whom he’s been working on some very special musical surprises!

Craig will be performing during the Eddy Finn Ukulele Mystery Tour (see below) with Sarah Maisel and others, and with his band during the Ukulele Party Night, held Saturday 6th July at the Union Jack.

A note from Craig on his return to Cairns:

“I cannot believe how fast time flies. My first trip to Cairns [in 2011] was very special. That was when I decided I was going to dedicate myself to music. Music will be my job 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Every decision will be made towards that goal. Looking back it seems it wasn’t much of a choice as I’ve been working toward that conclusion my whole life but in the moment, it was the scariest and most exciting point in my life.

I am overjoyed to be returning again to Cairns. I’ve been working on some very special surprises with other performers. Expect bigger this year. I’m sure we will expand on all the great things that worked out in previous and experiment with new ones! The staff has shown year after year that they are determined to put on a great event and have been incredibly successful thus far. For repeat attendees, expect more. As you have grown as musicians, so have we as instructors. As your ears have been soaking in more lovely ukulele music, we have been honing our craft and expanded on our skill sets. I promise you will see many more unique collaborations this year. I also promise that Sarah Maisel will bake you cookies. Well… maybe not but you will fall in love with her (and her music!).”

Cairns Ukulele Festival introduces new ukulele jazz sensation

Standard

Sarah MaiselDuring festival producer Gaby Thomasz’s visit to the United States last month to scout festival acts, she discovered a new ukulele talent that she believes will be the ukulele sensation of 2013: jazz singer and player Sarah Maisel.

Sarah’s captivating performance and engagement with the audience struck a chord with the producer, who is delighted to have come across such fresh talent. “Sarah is a rare find. Like James Hill, Sarah studied violin extensively, before seeing the unlimited possibilities of the ukulele. Whilst there are more and more players that tend to do instrumental interpretations of pop classics, showing of their flamenco style strumming and lightning fast picking following in the footsteps of ukulele trail blazers such as Jake Shimabukuro, there are very few players that focus on emotive touch and feel, whilst highlighting the fine nature of the instrument, and its suitability for jazz music”.

“Not only that, Sarah is one of the very few female players that I have come across that has such skill, charisma, and love for this genre of music on the ukulele. In addition to that, she has a wonderfully warm and expressive voice that covers styles from New York to New Orleans . I know she will mesmerise the audience at this year’s Cairns Ukulele Festival”, Ms Thomasz said. “Her unique chord progressions in her version of the jazz standard Autumn Leaves with her accompanying vocal has received rave reviews around the world, by those in the know”.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Sarah has always had a love for music. At the age of 6, she began violin lessons and played in youth orchestras for several years. Her focus was primarily classical for the 10 years she studied. During that time she also studied the piano, taking lessons for 3 years.

She took a break from music in college, following her other passion, theatre. She studied at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where she received her BFA in Costume Technology. After graduating in 2004, she moved out to San Diego, California to work for the La Jolla Playhouse and the University of California San Diego Theatre Department.

In September 2006, Sarah and a friend went to check out a Ukulele group at a pizza parlour in Encinitas, CA. Little did she realize that it was going to be such a life changing event. As Sarah put it “It was so amazing to go to this place where there were at least 40 Ukuleles, everyone was so happy, the room was filled with such joy. I just had to be a part of it.” As serendipity would have it, Frank Leong, the group leader, was starting group Ukulele lessons that October 2006. Sarah signed up and has been hooked on the uke ever since.

In 2009, Sarah met Producer Tim Coffman and started recording her own albums in 2010. The first album, ‘Have Uke Will Travel’ was well received and gave Sarah her first stepping stone. Since she has recorded two others, ‘In the Moment’, released in 2011, and ‘With Love- Sarah Maisel’ released in 2012.

Sarah plays a custom Mike DaSilva ukulele. Make sure you check it out during the festival – Mike DaSilva builds some of the finest ukuleles around!
