Cairns Ukulele Festival announces world record song

Cairns Ukulele Festival announces world record song

An upbeat latin / reggae style song by one of Australia’s most multi-talented and busy musicians, Melbournian Nicky Bomba, called Travellin’, has been chosen as the song that will be played during this year’s Cairns Ukulele Festival world record attempt.

Nicky Bomba, who has visited the north many times with his reggae band Bomba, and most recently as a drummer for John Butler, will conduct and sing the song during the proceedings in Fogarty Park on Saturday July 7th.  Free ‘learn to play’ workshops are planned in the lead up to the festival and at Fogarty Park on the day of the attempt.

“Although the bar has been raised last year by a town in Sweden and we now really have a challenge on our hands, we’re doing it again! The experience of so many people making music together and getting together for a common goal is just so good; it’s almost addictive! Many people told me it’s one of the most memorable things they have ever been part of”, festival organiser Gaby Thomasz said. “If everyone that was there last year brings along a friend, we have a chance of breaking the record”.

There is an instructional video on the festival web site with Nicky Bomba teaching people how to play and strum the song as well as the song sheet with chords and lyrics.

What’s more, Nicky has been working on a video clip for this song, and it is nearing completion. He has filmed himself playing ukulele and singing this song around the world, and the final shots for the video will be filmed at the festival!

The attempt is part of the Lanikai Ukulele Day, a day full of free entertainment by ukulele clubs, schools, and festival artists, held in Fogarty Park. Each year thousands make their way to this event, and the organisers in particular encourage families to come along, have a picnic, make and enjoy music.

More workshops and AJ Leonard’s Tropical Lounge announced

The Cairns Ukulele Festival is pleased to announce the return of AJ Leonard’s Tropical Lounge a fantastic 4-piece band from Melbourne. The band includes A.J.’s longtime performing partner Jenny Rowlands (the hardest working cellist in show business) and Wendy Rowlands on vocals, accordion, percussion and keyboards as well as David Billings on vocals, ukulele and guitar. The band has become a firm favourite with the festival crowd due to their beautiful arrangements, entertaining performances and ever-expanding repertoire of original and traditional  music.

Whilst in Cairns, AJ will be releasing his seventh album, Australian Songbook, produced and arranged with Tropical Lounge partner David.

AJ will also conduct two workshops at the festival. One is themed around his new album, the Australian Songbook. In this workshop AJ covers various strums as well as interesting chord sequences and inversions. The other workshop is based on the American Songbook, with a strong focus on the music of Henry Mancini, whose familiar classics include Peter Gunn, Baby Elephant Walk, Moon River and The Pink Panther. AJ will share some of the unique strumming and picking techniques he has become renowned for.

Derick Sebastian (Hawaii)

Through faith and hard work, Maui born local Derick Sebastian continues to live his dream as an accomplished ukulele virtuoso. He has shared the stage with fellow ukulele ace Jake Shimabukuro and opened for R&B singer sensation Brian McKnight, with notable performances at PIXAR Animation Studios , ABC’s Greys Anatomy, and professional sports industry’s MLB Arizona Diamondbacks, along with events for the PGA, ESPN and EA SPORTS. Derick recently broke into the Hollywood scene composing the theme song to the movie Life’s An Itch. These opportunities presented to Derick have not come without hard work and dedication. While garnering these many accomplishments, Derick is humbled and stays true to himself, and continues his dedication to inspire lives through his music and impact the world through the pure sounds he evokes through the ukulele. With a personal commitment to his work, Derick’s musical journey is on the upswing, and you won’t want to miss the opportunity to watch this young man from Maui’s star continue to rise…STOP. UKE. Matt Dahlberg (USA)

Matt DahlbergMatt (The Jumping Flea) Dahlberg is an up and coming artist in the new revolution of ukulele players. He plays with a dedication and passion for the instrument that is infectious. Having played the first two Cairns Ukulele Festivals and toured Australia extensively, Matt’s no stranger to the Australian ukulele-loving audiences. His instrumentals have been described as “luxurious”, “awe-inspiring”, “unbelievable”. We look forward to hearing the compositions he’s been working on the past year! Of course, as has become tradition, Matt will host a free workshop on the Sunday at the Tanks Arts Centre. Matt was featured on the front of the New York Times because he is so successful utilising the internet as a tool to teach players world-wide, and judging the ratings he receives at our festival each year, that’s no surprise to us!
